Dodgy Clutch set off  for the International Village of Culture

Newcastle-based Dodgy Clutch, in partnership with South African company,  Uhpondo lwe Afrika have set off on their 38 date rural tour of England. With their first three nights taking place in Lancashire, we’ve found audiences of all ages delighted by the energy, exuberance and power of the company of five, as they perform Xolisile’s Song.

‘Xolisile’s Song’ consists of four simple stories connected through a swallow; the messenger of hope. It tells the lives of four different people in an uplifting tale of innocence and reconciliation.

Performing in English and Xhosa, the show combines South African performing traditions in dance, theatre and music, with Northumbrian folk song, ballet and a little bit of cajun thrown in.  Audiences have described the show as uplifting, vibrant, powerful, excellent, and energising. It suites all ages, our youngest captivated viewer being 18 months old.

The tour is part of an International Collaborative Commission project led by the Northern Rural Touring Consortium and is a legacy of the International Village of Culture festival March 2009. It is made possible  by Arts Council Grants for the Arts and the National Rural Touring Forum.
